Imo State Government Declares Newly Created Villages in Obi Mbieri Null and Void

The Imo State Council of Traditional Institution and Community Policing has officially cancelled the creation of all newly established villages in Obi Mbieri Autonomous Community, located in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, citing violations of due process and concerns over a potential breakdown of law and order.

In a letter dated June 17, 2026, addressed to the Palace Secretary of Obi Mbieri Autonomous Community, the Council stated that the new villages were created without the consent, approval, or authorisation of the government-recognised traditional ruler, His Royal Highness, Eze (Dr.). Josiah Osuji.

According to the Council, investigations confirmed that the traditional ruler has been receiving medical treatment overseas for an extended period and did not personally authorise the creation of any new villages.

The Council noted that the unauthorised actions have generated tensions within parts of the community and could further destabilise peace and harmony if not urgently addressed.

"The illegal creation of the new villages in Obi Mbieri Autonomous Community is an effort in futility and has been declared null and void for failure to follow due process," the Council stated in the official correspondence.

Concerns Over Community Stability

As the state agency responsible for oversight of traditional institutions and community policing matters, the Council emphasised that maintaining peace and preventing communal conflicts remain top government priorities.

Officials disclosed that reports, correspondence, and pictorial evidence submitted to the Council revealed growing disagreements and disturbances linked to the disputed creation of the village.

The Council stressed that any attempt to alter a community's administrative or traditional structure must follow established legal and traditional procedures, particularly where such decisions affect governance, representation, and communal identity.

Government Issues Strong Warning

The Council warned individuals and groups involved in the unauthorised creation of villages to desist immediately, emphasising that the Imo State Government would not tolerate actions undermining peace and public order.

Authorities further cautioned that anyone responsible for activities that could trigger unrest in the community would face legal consequences and be held accountable by law enforcement agencies.

"The state government will not tolerate any further breakdown of law and order in our communities, especially Obi Mbieri Autonomous Community," the Council stated.

Copies of the directive were forwarded to several government and security authorities, including the Executive Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

The directive was signed by His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr.) E.C. Okeke, Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Institution and Community Policing, and Chairman of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers.
