Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo JP has formally handed over the affairs of Mbaitoli Local Government Area to the Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS), marking the conclusion of his tenure as Executive Chairman.
Nwanegwo announced the development in a statement on Monday, October 5, following a handover ceremony attended by the Mbaitoli APC LGA Chairman, Hon. Collins Obih, members of the party's executive committee, councillors, members of the Executive Council, friends, stakeholders and other well-wishers.
Describing the occasion as both memorable and emotional, Nwanegwo said the handover provided an opportunity to reflect on his tenure and appreciate the people and institutions that supported his administration.
He expressed gratitude to God for what he described as the grace, wisdom and strength to serve the people of Mbaitoli and complete the chapter.
The outgoing chairman specifically thanked Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for his support, confidence and the enabling environment provided during his administration.
According to Nwanegwo, the governor's support enabled his administration to pursue what he described as a more people-oriented approach to governance in Mbaitoli.
He also thanked the people of Mbaitoli, traditional rulers, community leaders, political leaders, women, youths, councillors, members of the Executive Council, civil servants and other stakeholders for their support.
Reflecting on his tenure, Nwanegwo highlighted what he described as an inclusive administration in which residents and stakeholders were given opportunities to contribute to the affairs of the local government.
He said he was particularly humbled by commendations from leaders and stakeholders at the handover ceremony concerning his administration's efforts toward inclusiveness and people-oriented policies.
“I do not take these commendations for granted,” Nwanegwo said, describing them as a reminder that public office is ultimately about service, responsibility and the people being served.
Nwanegwo said he formally handed over the affairs of the local government to the Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS).

However, his statement did not specify the duration of the DAGS's role or indicate who will subsequently serve as the political head of the local government.
The handover therefore marks the end of Nwanegwo's tenure, while the administrative arrangement following the transition remains a matter for official clarification.
The handover came on the same day Nwanegwo issued a separate message to the APC family in Mbaitoli.
In the letter dated October 5, 2026, titled “A Message of Appreciation, Continued Loyalty and Commitment,” Nwanegwo thanked Governor Uzodimma and APC leaders, ward executives, councillors, stakeholders and members of the party for their support during his tenure.
He stated that as the party moved into “another chapter,” he was reaffirming his continued loyalty, commitment and dedication to the APC.
The statement is significant because it places his conclusion of tenure alongside an explicit declaration of continued commitment to the governing party.
However, neither the handover statement nor the October 5 letter announces a new political office, appointment or future political position for Nwanegwo.
In his farewell message, Nwanegwo prayed for continued guidance for the leadership and people of Mbaitoli, as well as stronger communities and greater opportunities for residents.
He expressed hope that the next chapter would bring greater unity, peace, development and prosperity to the local government.
“Thank you, Mbaitoli, for the privilege and honour of serving you,” he concluded.
Eziokwubundu.com will continue to follow developments surrounding the leadership transition in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
