Security agencies in Imo State have located the suspected forest camp where prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted near Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area, are believed to be held.
The development follows the October 1 attack on two buses travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. Gunmen intercepted the buses along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area and took passengers into the bush.
The Imo State Police Command initially announced that 10 victims had been rescued after security agencies responded to the attack. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said at the time that security agencies were continuing efforts to locate the remaining abductees and that the exact number of people abducted was still being verified.
However, subsequent accounts have produced different figures.
Some reports and statements have referred to 19 prospective corps members being abducted, while other reports, including an update attributed to the Imo State Commissioner of Police, have referred to 20 victims.
There is also disagreement over what happened to the 10 people described by police as rescued. Some relatives later told journalists that the 10 people had escaped into the bush rather than being rescued by security personnel. This account conflicts with the police and Defence Headquarters' earlier description of the development as a rescue.
Therefore, the exact number of people still in captivity has not been conclusively established in the public record.
For now, reports should distinguish between the police-confirmed rescue of 10 people and the 19–20 figure appearing in subsequent accounts.
The latest security update indicates that operatives have succeeded in locating the suspected hideout.

However, security personnel have not immediately entered the location.
According to the police commissioner, intelligence indicated that the suspected camp had been mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The reported explosive threat has therefore delayed an immediate advance on the camp as security agencies seek a safer way to reach the location and rescue the victims.
Bosso said security agencies were preparing to use additional operational equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers (APCs), as part of efforts to reach the victims safely.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has also deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Umar Nadada, alongside additional tactical personnel and operational assets to strengthen the rescue effort. Nadada said security agencies were working to secure the victims' safe release.
As of the latest reports available on October 5, 2026, there has been no official confirmation that all the remaining abducted prospective corps members have been rescued.
The latest confirmed operational development is that security agencies have located the suspected camp, but the reported IED threat has prevented an immediate assault.
The conflicting reports over whether 19 or 20 prospective corps members remain affected—and the disagreement over the circumstances surrounding the reported rescue of 10 people—mean that the final number of victims still in captivity remains unresolved.
Eziokwubundu.com will continue to distinguish confirmed security updates from unverified claims as authorities provide further information on the rescue operation.
