Obi Mbieri’s Current State Sparks Concern as Chief Basil Agunwoke Speaks Out

Chief Basil Ozoamaka Agunwoke has expressed deep concern over the current state of affairs in the Obi Mbieri autonomous community, calling for greater transparency regarding the status of Ezeukwu I of Obi Mbieri, Eze (Elder) Dr. Josiah Nzeremibe Osuji.

In a statement shared on the Obi Mbieri “Leaders of Thought” platform and made available to Eziokwubundu.com, Chief Agunwoke emphasized that the time has come for the royal family to provide clear and factual information to the people concerning the wellbeing and current position of the traditional ruler.

He expressed concern over what he described as prolonged uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the community, noting that for several years, the throne has appeared to function without direct and visible leadership. According to him, this situation has created confusion and raised questions among stakeholders.

Chief Agunwoke also recounted an incident during an Eze-in-Council meeting in December 2024, where he observed Prince Kester Chinwendu Osuji presiding over proceedings from the traditional throne. He described the development as inconsistent with established customs and traditions, particularly given that the Eze is still alive.

He further noted that objections were raised during the meeting by some elders, leading to a protest walkout by concerned participants who questioned the legitimacy of the arrangement.

Reiterating the principles guiding traditional leadership in Obi Mbieri, Chief Agunwoke stressed that the Eze stool is neither hereditary nor transferable and must follow due process rooted in the customs and constitution of the community. He warned against any approach that may appear to bypass established procedures.

He concluded by calling on the people of Obi Mbieri to seek clarity on the welfare and status of their traditional ruler, while urging all stakeholders to prioritize truth, transparency, and respect for tradition. He also encouraged the community to draw lessons from neighboring administrations where governance structures are more clearly defined and communicated.

The statement has added to ongoing conversations within Obi Mbieri, as residents continue to advocate for unity, accountability, and adherence to cultural and constitutional standards in the leadership of the community.
