The people of Rivers South – East are mourning the loss of their senator, Barinada Mpigi, whose passing was confirmed on Thursday.
While details about the circumstances of his death are still unclear, many in the community remember him as a dedicated public servant who spent years representing their interests at both national and local levels.
Born on June 23, 1961, Mpigi began his journey in public service in 2011 as a member of the House of Representatives, where he served two terms. In 2019, he was elected to the Senate, continuing his work on behalf of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Throughout his time in office, he remained closely connected to issues affecting his constituents—particularly in the Niger Delta. He played a key role in efforts to tackle crude oil theft, a challenge that has deeply impacted local communities and livelihoods.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, he also contributed to the oversight of infrastructure projects aimed at improving roads and development across the country.
At 64, his passing leaves a gap not only in the Senate but also in the communities he served, where many will remember his commitment and presence.
