Residents of Mbaitoli Local Government Area have been put on high alert following the release of disturbing video footage by the local vigilante group, exposing suspected kidnappers and bandits operating under the guise of house maintenance workers.
According to reports, the footage was shared with Eziokwubundu.com, revealing how criminal elements allegedly infiltrate communities by posing as artisans and repair workers. The suspects are believed to have connections to areas including Ngor Okpala in Imo and Jos in Plateau State.
The Mbaitoli Vigilante Group stated that the operation leading to their capture was carried out after weeks of surveillance and community tip-offs. In the videos, individuals identified as part of the syndicate were seen moving suspiciously between residential compounds, reportedly scouting potential targets.
A spokesperson for the vigilante group warned residents to be cautious when hiring unfamiliar workers, emphasizing the importance of verifying identities before granting access to homes. “These criminals have devised new tactics. They now disguise themselves as painters, bricklayers, electricians, and repairmen to gain trust and access,” the Mbaitoli security spokesperson said.
Community leaders have also called for stronger collaboration between residents, vigilante groups, and security agencies to curb the rising threat. They urged landlords and tenants alike to document and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Local authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the footage, but sources indicate that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to track down other members of the network.
The incident has sparked widespread concern across Mbaitoli and neighboring communities, as residents grapple with evolving security challenges and increasingly sophisticated criminal tactics.
